Personalize onboarding to drive activation
A worked example that ties segments, personalizations, and experiments together to move new signups to activation, using one profile across your site and your app.
Most personalization advice stops at the homepage. The higher-value job is moving a new signup to activation, the moment they get real value. This guide shows how to connect segments, personalizations, and experiments into one activation play, using the same customer profile across your marketing site and your product.
This is the pattern Intempt runs on its own site and console. The profile a visitor builds before they sign up is the same profile your product reads after they sign in, so the context carries across.
1. Define activation
Pick one event that means a user reached value, not just signed up. For a data product that might be "connected a source and saw their own data." Everything below is scored against that event, never against clicks.
2. Segment by what they did, across sessions
Build a segment from behavior, not a single visit. For example, visitors who read a particular set of guides, or who entered their domain on your site. Because the profile is stable across sign-in, a segment built from pre-signup behavior still matches the user once they are in your product.
3. Personalize the next step
Use a personalization to change what that segment sees:
- Client-side (web personalization) for visual changes on a page, with no engineering.
- Server-side (the Choose API) when your app needs a value to branch on, such as which onboarding path to open or which fields to prefill.
Aim the change at the one step that stands between the user and activation: open onboarding on the job they came for, prefill what you already know, and point at the single missing step.
4. Run it as an experiment
Ship the change as an experiment with a holdout, so you can tell whether it actually moved activation rather than guessing. Keep the variant only if it beats the holdout on the activation event.
5. Measure the funnel, not the click
Track the full funnel in Analyze: visit, signup, onboarding complete, activation. Break it down by segment and by variant. The number that decides whether a personalization stays is the activation rate for its stage, not the click-through on the element you changed.
Web personalizations
Web personalizations allow you to deliver targeted content to visitors to your site using a simple JavaScript snippet. This enables a fast setup for marketers without relying on engineers to create...
Feature flags
A feature flag serves a value your code reads by key, to a share of people you choose. Roll it out gradually, pull it back instantly, and keep everyone's answer stable while you do.
